Review of Crimson Peak (2015) by Willy W — 23 Jan 2016
To me it felt like a romance with ghosts thrown in every once in a while. Mia Wasikowska, a very good actress, is not given very much to do and as such her performance is somewhat one note as she is relegated to basically just reacting to scary things every once in a while.
Surprisingly Jessica Chastain does occasionally chew hunks out of the scenery, which is problematic as the creepy atmosphere turns more goofy when this happens. Essentially it is creepy, not scary (which perhaps was the objective), and I wasn't particularly drawn in by the central story.
One thing that needs to be mentioned is the visual aspect of the movie, which is incredible. The set design is extremely well suited to the atmosphere and Guillermo del Toro has certainly nailed that particular aspect with his cinematographer and production design team.
