Review of Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) by Erik S — 16 Dec 2007
What an underrated Woody Allen movie! A successul ophthalmologist adulterer decides to off his mistress, who has threatened to confess their relationship to his comfortable wife. Fearing a revolution in his life, the good doctor decides to engage his underworld brother to arrange for her murder.
Paroxysms of guilt prompt profound introspection, with a surprising and slightly disturbing resolution. Another Bermanian meditation on crime, guilt, the sincere search for faith, varieties of love, and a smattering of typical Allen preoccupations - but all in the context of an unusually tight little drama.
Good flick!
