This is quite possibly Woody Allen's greatest achievement, and that's certainly no small praise. "Crimes and Misdemeanors" is a thought-provoking and complex examination of the nature of morals, and how our decisions are influenced by an internal conflict which arises from the presence of opposing ethical ideologies.

At times it is quite funny, but mostly it is a harrowing, bitter and sadly poignant look at life. The most stunning realization comes at the end of the film: the doctor, having murdered his mistress, resumes his satisfying and successful life, while the filmmaker who sticks to his principles is left poor, alone and desperate.

Sometimes life is harsh and cruel, and if you expect something more cheerful and uplifting, "you've been watching too many movies.".
