Review of Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) by Liam P — 21 Jun 2011
The success of this film is in its structure. The balancing act between a very serious story and one with lashings of humour is handled perfectly. It becomes a little heavy handed with its sweeping generalisations on morality but you can tell that even Allen knew he was on to a winner because he really goes for it.
The cast is excellent all round, particularly Martin Landau.
I'm probably a little harsh with my star rating as this is certainly one of Woody Allen's finest and most admirable films.
