Review of Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) by Andrew S — 07 Jul 2012
And so my Woody Allen film campaign continues with Crimes and Misdemeanors. C&M is perhaps not Allen's strongest film, but a film swinging from drama to comedy in such a fashion is a rarity. The seeds that he will use much later in his spectacular Match Point are clearly notable as Landau searches but ultimately fails to find justice and judgment.
A morality play brought together with Allen's unfair romance. As always though the dialogue is lightning fast and the humour in particular is said with confidence from its over thinking yet defeatable protagonist.
A good film, but not a great Allen film. Perhaps Diane Keaton needs to return.
