Review of Cries and Whispers (1972) by Lee F — 24 May 2008
Do not watch this film if you are remotely depressed when you sit down to view it. It will devastate you. That said, this is superb Bergman, with commendable performances and fabulous cinematography. A powerful reflection on death and dying, sickness, sexual repression, and yes, the color red.
A film that is experienced more than viewed. Probably Liv Ullmann's best performance. Better than Persona, but not as good as the classics from the 1950s and early 1960s.
