Review of Cries and Whispers (1972) by Brian I — 24 Aug 2008
I had to think about this one for a while after seeing it. I didn't think it was great, but its expressionism was bracing. The shocking violent episodes (the husband stabbing himself and Karin mutilating herself) is best understood as an expression of extreme psychic pain.
Anna presenting a bared breast to the dying Agnes is symbolizes the tenderness and sympathy she feels for the dying woman in light of the loss of her own young daughter. It's good, but it doesn't live up to the hype.
