Review of Cries and Whispers (1972) by Corey C — 13 Jun 2009
Optimistic! Well, the last few minutes, and only kind of. The rest of the film is as disturbing and shocking and frightening as any film I've ever seen. Maria and Karin are trapped in miserable constructs of their own design, while their sister Agnes, who actually likes her life, lies dying in agony.
But even with all the misery, it was worth living, right? Right, Ingmar Bergman? Is it bad that I'm less sure about the answer to that question now? And that Sven Nykvist, man, what a pro.
