Review of Cria! (1976) by Andrew B — 15 Apr 2008
A darkly disturbing film from Spanish New Wave director Carlos Suara. The film follows three young sisters, but particularly Ana (played by Ana Torrent), as they deal with the loss of their father and start being raised by their Aunt.
Ana is taumented by fantastical visions of her dead mother...and the paths of the real and the hallucinatory cross in impressive and at times intense fashion. The tortured innocence of Ana is particularly disturbing, especially in the concluding scenes.
..when she unremorsefully plots to kill her Aunt. We are taken into the walls of this bourgeois household and shown an image of what Spain was at the time of Franco's death in 1975.
