Review of Cria! (1976) by Hernán B — 30 May 2009
It's title is taken from an old spanish proverb "Raise Ravens and they will pluck your eyes out". Of course, we know there has been corruption and turbulence within this family, but what is truly the focus and the most endearing part of the picture is the young girl's emotional and psychological journey to try and deal with all the tragedy that has occurred.
The little girl played by Ana Torrent presents a class act performance. The honesty in her eyes is something I will never forget. Whether working off of truth from her own life, or not, Saura's attention or maybe even lack of attention with Ana, presented one of the most provoking child performances I've ever seen.
Saura has stated, life as a young child is a horrible time. He has said when being a child "you feel lost, you don't know where to go". He presents an honest picture to his words, but I believe Ana reaches a point of clarity, or at least we can hope.
Overall the picture is concise, and yes it's sad. It was made during a time of political upheaval, a time when a massive Dictator was dying. Whether you want to look at it from a psychological or political point of view, this picture is truly, all there.
