Review of Creepshow (1982) by William B — 25 Jan 2009
Ridiculously fun movie. I usually have no use for Stephen King, but in most of these vignettes, he seems to really get just what made E.C. comic books so awesome (except for the story featuring King's own acting-- that one was just humorless and dull).
We get to see horrible people getting their supernatural comeuppance via zombies, monsters, bugs... it's all there, and it's all great. My one criticism is that the dialogue is frequently terrible, and not in a good way.
E.C. comics were transgressive because of the gore and the supernatural stuff, but they didn't contain profanity. And the fact that it's profanity written by Stephen King (who seems to operate under the delusion that people actually say things like "I'll be dipped in shit" or "fuck-a-dilly") causes the audience to cringe in ways King and Romero probably didn't intend.
