Review of Creepshow (1982) by Tristan P — 03 Mar 2009
A lot has been said and written about the influence of the EC Comics horror books of the 50s on the horror film directors and horror story writers of the 70s and 80s. Here, two of the undisputed masters of horror, George A. Romero and Stephen King, make that influence perfectly clear. King's stories are peppered with EC-style (or O. Henry-style?) ironies, and Romero has crafted the most comic-book-like comic-book film ever; after watching the film you almost feel like checking your fingertips for ink.
My personnal favourite segment is "Something to Tide You Over". It's snappy, gruesome and even a little creepy, with excellent performances from Leslie Neilsen, Ted Dansen and Gaylen Ross. "The Crate" is a superb story as well.
