Review of Creepshow (1982) by Eric C — 23 Nov 2009
Classic horror film to the fullest. Now a days we don't get these type of films anymore. Anthologies are the least tapped movie resource that Hollywood should open back up. Here Stephen King and George Romero have come together to bring us some great storytelling. The stories are set with a grim look, remanescent of the old EC Comics from the 1950's. So here we are with a little small overall of each story.
MAIN STORY-PROLOGUE AND EPILOGUE.
Here we get a simple story, one everyone have had to deal with; the parent who throws away your comic. Tom Atkins(Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Night of the Creeps)plays the unruley father and does a fine job. I can remember George Wendt playing a similar role in a certain Michael Jackson video hmmmm. The final part of this story takes place at the end, with the garbage men (one being Tom Savini, make up wizard on this film)seeing the thrown away comic and noticing a voodoo doll coupon missing. Uh oh!
FATHER'S DAY.
Here's the first story and man does it kick the film into high gear. It's not the best of the stories, but it certainly gets everything moving. The only thing I can really mention here is we see Ed Harris in an early role as an unfortunate dinner guest. The lighting for when the murders occur is also pretty cool, it has that whole comic book vibe. 3 out of 5 stars.
THE LONESOME DEATH OF JORDY VERRILL.
Here's probably the least scary and unnerving story of the 5 stories. Here Stephen King himself, plays a dimwitted farmer who comes across a meteor. In my opinion the reason the story doesn't work for is the fact that its featured as a mockery of what the film is supposed to be. It is very funny at moments and that helps keep it entertaining, but its meant to be eerie or scary. 2 out of 5 stars.
SOMETHING TO TIDE YOU OVER.
Probably my favorite of the stories, Ted Danson and Leslie Nielson are great in this short, especially Nielsen, who is most known for his comedy. Nielsen's maniac character is very unnerving and emotionaless, very scary if met in real life. This story gives off the usual, bad guy gets what's coming to him twist, by the end of it and it becomes very satisfying. 4 out of 5 stars.
THE CRATE.
Eeek, many give this short a praise, in my opinion its overrated, still fun to watch a bit, but it may be because of how long it runs. The make up FX are fantastic and the suspense is on par, so I guess I can recommend this film. 3 out of 5 stars.
THEY'RE CREEPING ON YOU.
Only for those who don't feel creepy crawlers on you when they're not there. I do love this short very much, imagining this happening to someone, who is a clean freak is probably the mot terrifying for that person. So definitely come and see this short. 4 out of 5 stars.
Well there you have it, Creepshow, as an overall film I have to say, like any film it has its highs and lows, but here its just fun watching each segmant and knowing that a new story is on its way.
Overall rating 4 out of 5 stars.
