Review of Creep (2014) by Chris O — 16 Nov 2015
After watching this movie, it was hilarious to find out that this is listed as a Romance movie. I mean, seriously? But anyways, here we go.
I'll say that this movie has a leg up on most found-footage horrors these days. The plot is a little more sensible and it makes sense as to why they're filming everything. I thought that Mark Duplass did a great job in this movie. He was the stand-out performance compared to his counter-part Patrick Brice. He was able to deliver a character performance that was mysterious, yet relatable (at first). I couldn't really tell what his true intentions were until the end and he showed great emotion.
This movie is smarter than most other horror movies, but still lacks in many areas. Nothing is really scary in this movie and I never really felt threatened. The comedy was more awkward than comical and it didn't really flow well. They tried to utilize jump scares in a way that made it "funny", but didn't do much in the end. The first half of the movie was interesting enough, but ultimately just felt kind of weird and awkward. The second half of this movie was bigger, but after the climax, a lot of things didn't make sense. The more I think about the events in the end, the more the story line unravels and it becomes a mess. A lot of the information given contradicted with each other and it made the character of Patrick Brice look stupid. There are some situations where he could've easily fixed the problem, but failed because of stupidity.
This movie's ratings are definitely overrated, and this isn't much better than.
Most of the stuff coming out these days. The only thing I liked was Mark Duplass's acting and the effort that the movie gave to the story. Notice how I said effort, rather than execution. The more I think about this movie and the more I dig deeper into the story, the worse it gets. I was originally going to give this movie a 2.5 stars, but now I'm going to downgrade it to 2 stars. It just had no meaning, didn't make sense, wasn't executed great, the script was alright, and it tried to be too big. By the way, I know this movie just got a release into theaters, but I found it on Netflix. So don't spend your money at the theater when you can watch this film for a lot less on Netflix. Plus, it's probably not worth watching anyways.
