Review of Creep (2014) by Jarek M — 04 Aug 2015

Really enjoyed this movie. Duplass plays this character so well, he jumps from being very thoroughly unsettling and then kind of pathetic or even sympathetic. There really aren't that many cuts so it really contributes to the feeling that you're alone with this creep. I'd even say this is the best "home footage" type movie I've ever seen. The jump scares actually work, especially when Duplassi's character just jumps out at Patrick and then proceeds to make the situation even more disturbing with his weird, crazy apologies and justifications. This movie isn't for everybody (it seems like a lot of people just outright think that "home footage" style horror films are just bad film making, in my opinion this is the movie that proves them wrong).

Watch it alone in a dark room so you can really empathize with the victim (maybe a little weed to get you in the zone), and I don't see how someone couldn't find this movie terrifying. If you're half-watching it or discussing with someone else throughout it, it will detract from the experience quite a bit. But I'm a scary movie junkie (I'm always looking for movies that will make me feel unsettled and that give me shivers of fear, slasher/gore movie usually don't do it for me), and I consider this to be one of the most frightening movie I've seen in years. There's nothing supernatural about it, just one normal guy and one creep that you could totally imagine living up your street. Just watch it.

Edit: A lot of really negative reviews here on RT. You guys are brutal... So I changed my rating to 5 stars. Some people just can't appreciate subtlety... I'll say it again; one of the most well-made and well-acted "found footage" movies I've ever seen, but there are clearly limitations in "found footage" movies, but it wouldn't be half as terrifying if it couldn't maintain this illusion that you're actually looking at some dude's footage.
