Review of Creed II (2018) by Rob P — 11 Dec 2018
What a blast! Sly and MBJ do it again in this powerful, emotional sequel-to-the-sequel. As much of a sequel to Rocky movies 3 and 4 as it is to Creed, you get a solid backstory on the Drago family, a Clubber Lang type to overcome in Florian Muntineau's Ivan, and a sneaky-amazing performance from Tessa Thompson (Bianca's pre-fight intro of Adonis sets a new standard for badass pre-fight intros).
It's a Rocky film so you know how things go; if you're looking for a massive formula change, ask New Coke how that went. Instead, you get the most intense in-ring boxing scenes ever filmed. Remember how the original Rocky films changed how sports movies were filmed? The fight scenes in Creed II take it all to the next level: personal, absolutely brutal, agonizing to watch, and deeply moving.
No Best Picture nominee here, but an immensely entertaining movie and a wonderful addition to the canon.
