Review of Creed II (2018) by Johnathan C — 25 Nov 2018
Although the script is predictable at times and the relationships between major characters do not grow or transform much, the Creed franchiseï¿ 1/2(TM)s follow-up is reviving a lost genre by providing solid, inspiring cinema that is athlete- and training-centric. The scenes of sport have never been better punch-for-punch, and the soundtrack is bound to be played on every gym ratï¿ 1/2(TM)s rotation through the New Year. As a sequel, I found it preferrable over the first in how it fits in as a piece of the overarching Rocky brand films. Itï¿ 1/2(TM)s also grittier and more grounded, challenging our protagonist in ways he wasnï¿ 1/2(TM)t in the first, especially physically. For sports lovers and athletes, witnessing a relatable and grueling physical journey in film as much of a reward we can hope for, and Caple delivers here where Coogler only began to explore it. However, this speaks to my affinity for Coogler as a great visionary and architect of settings. He carefully designed a present in which Rocky and Adonis could coexist naturally; Caple was able to set up camp here and create a truly great sports film.
Simply put, should the franchise continue, I believe Creed II is the standard all future installments will be held to. I also believe it may be gritty and physical enough to revive a much-needed genre.
