Review of Creed (2015) by Mike D — 09 Jul 2016
Writer-director Ryan Coogler gives new vitality to the "Rocky" series by updating the old sports drama formula with a fresh spin. Former prize fighter Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is now an old, broken down, restaurant owner, out of the boxing limelight, who takes under his wing, training the illegitimate son (Michael B.
Jordan) of his former rival, Apollo Creed. Coogler respects the formula but he doesn't cheapen it as the sequels did. By telling this story from the black experience, fraught with paternal identity crises, Coogler elevates the myth for a younger, more multicultural generation and announces his presence as a major commercial movie director.
Jordan is a rising star with the charisma and forcefulness of a young Denzel Washington. Tessa Thompson is affecting as a hearing-impaired musician and Creed's love interest. Stallone gives possibly his finest performance in his most iconic role.
He underplays beautifully and expresses shades of regret, mortal recognition, and sorrow, but also the triumphant spirit that made his character so popular. Written by Coogler and Aaron Covington based on characters by Stallone.
With Phylicia Rashad, Tony Bellew, and Wood Harris.
