Review of Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) by Adam H — 04 May 2010
Sometimes it can be hard to go back to these classics and watch them, as desensitized as I am, and appreciate them for the impact they would have had in their time. True, a classic is timeless and can be appreciated by any generation preceding it. But often the legacy left by these pictures turns them into cliche. And After 60 years of monster movies piled on top of the Universal originals, it can be hard to see it as an original peice.
Still though, I did enjoy this movie. Little more than a popcorn flick, the monster is great. I the suit is very well put together and his blank, uncompromising stare is pretty unsettling. The Human element are fine, and there is a relatively well told "greed is evil" story and a pretty well developed "love triangle" story as well.
Where this movie shines is the great underwater sequences. They are shot beautifully, especially given the time, and the actor in the costume does an incredible job portraying an underwater creature. All in all, it's a classic and shouldn't be missed by die-hard fans of the horror/Suspense genres.
