Review of Creation (2009) by Nyk P — 16 Feb 2010
Creation is a failure. It fails to accurately depict its subject, a man haunted by the death of his beloved daughter (not, as the movie portrays, by his daughter... literally). It fails to responsibly portray (or perhaps even understand) Darwin's work, and indeed science in general, instead resorting to the kitsche Hollywood propism, including beakers filled with mysterious brews, skulls resting ominously on dusty desks, and yes, preserved fetuses in jars. Finally, it fails to grasp the entire point of this important point in history. Darwin's work is depicted the product of a reluctant, cynical worldview, the result of a dark and uncaring world. Nature is ugly. Humanity is ugly. The religious presence is concerned for its troubled son, Charles.
Creation would bring delight to any radical fundamentalist. Ultimately, it misses the point entirely.
