Review of Creation (2009) by Joe T — 03 Dec 2010
The struggle of an ailing man coming to terms with personal loss and with the discovery of unwanted truths, Creation is about Charles Darwin and his difficulty in writing his most famous book, On the Origin of Species.
An interesting film about a complicated man, Paul Bettany makes a compelling lead and the supporting cast is excellent. Sad, romantic, and ultimately, uplifting, the film does what a good bio-pic should do.
It focuses on a very specific issue (in this case, dealing with a tragic death), and tells a solid story around that that gives us some sense of the man as he may have been. It isn't simply a series of recreations of famous moments from his life, strung together by loose plotting, like so many films of this genre (Amelia, Coco Before Chenille, and so many more).
