Powerful acting and emotional character tragedies propel this film beyond a simple telling of Darwin's intellectual accomplishments and delves into his personal family life in dramatic fashion. His struggles with what his work meant to religious establishment in his day feel muted though, if almost downplayed and remains a secondary focus of the story.
