Review of Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011) by Allan C — 01 Dec 2012
Calling it a romantic comedy is not quite an accurate description of this terrific film. It's more a comedy about a lot of unromantic behavior, but done in a very real and sincere way. Steve Carell is is great as a cuckolded husband who decides to go on the prowl, but is clueless how to do that until he starts getting advice from the ultra smooth Ryan Gossling.
But the film is much more than a simple Pygmalion story. There's also Carell's son who is crushing on his baby sitter, who herself is crushing on Carell. Then there is Carrell's older daughter who continues to brush off the advances of Gosslin, unbenounced to Carrell.
And then there is the love triangle between Carrell, ex-wife Julianne Moore and the other man, played by Kevin Bacon. It's a mess of relationships that all collide with great comic effect, but the film is also very warm and sincere despite the characters' many bad behaviors.
It's not as over the directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa's "Bad Santa", but it's at times just as funny. This one is a must see!
