Review of Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011) by Grady H — 20 Jan 2014
Crazy Stupid Love is a decent film, but a bit overrated. I'm not really a fan of super soppy rom-coms. This is a bit like Love Actually, but with less characters. The film is about Cal Weaver (Steve Carrell) who has separated from his wife after she cheated on him and struggles to adjust to the single life, that is until he meets Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling) who is a big ladies man and beds a different woman every night. Jacob helps Cal to brush up on his dating skills and get laid. Meanwhile Cal's wife Emily (Julianne Moore) regrets her affair and wants Cal back. Cal's son Robbie is madly in love with his babysitter, Jessica and his daughter Hannah is having boyfriend troubles.
It has a few charming moments and Emma Stone is always so delightful and is a really talented young actress. I found the rest of the performances a bit average. This film is nice enough and a decent watch, but it's not really my thing. However it does have a few nice messages, that you should work on your marriage even when things get tough. I thought the chemistry between Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling was really electric and they made a cute couple, however in reality I don't think it's that easy to tame a ladies man and it's not everyday that your boyfriend's Ryan Gosling. Definitely worth watching though, especially if you're a Ry-Go fan! I prefer Leonardo DiCaprio and Channing Tatum. For me this is another slightly above average romantic comedy.
Grade: B-/C+.
