Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by Teriek W — 16 Nov 2018
In this Asian-themed rom com, a young economics professor at NYU accompanies her boyfriend to his best friend's wedding in Singapore only to discover his extreme wealth and high social status. Pushed into the spotlight, she faces the snobbery of socialites, the insanity of relatives and a stern, disapproving mother.
While a typical recipe for a romantic comedy, the Asian aspect seemed to arouse a sense of distinction to the film's genre trappings. In truth, it does create that distinction as it throws out some cultural quirks Asian audiences likely will understand. Unfortunately, those elements don't overcome the general banality of the film's dialogue, plodding narrative, hammy acting and generally uninteresting progression.
Fundamentally, Crazy Rich Asians is yet another film hyped up for its "importance" without the corresponding merit that would be a more meaningful metric for both its praise and the relevance of a pro-diversity agenda in the arts. Thus far, its been praise for the sake of agenda and agenda for the sake of.. well... agenda. If the agenda doesn't serve the art, I simply don't have much use for it... hence my lack of use for Crazy Rich Asians.
