Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by Marylou R — 10 Oct 2018
Perhaps the best tourism advertising about Singapore in recent memory.
"Crazy Rich Asians" is inexcusably Asian and that help it evades some of the most devastating clichés in a rom-com. Scenes such as the climax of the mahjong game led me straight to Google to better understand the sequence, and the result was a greater appreciation of the culture shown. So, mission accomplished on that side.
But beyond the cultural relevance of Hollywood greenlighting a romantic summer comedy with a full Asian cast, "Crazy Rich Asians" is just well written. You don't have to be Asian - hell, you don't even have to be pro-diversity - to enjoy it.
Of course, all this in a context of light romantic comedy with Ubër-weddings, difficult mothers-in-law (Michelle Yeoh 5/5) and Ken Jeong and Jimmy O. Yang doing stupid stuff.
PS: Release the Kraken with the upcoming wedding trend of barefoot brides walking in puddles with some horrible cellophane forests around.
