Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by Lanre O — 15 Sep 2018
While I can't speak on a cultural level as to what this film means to me, as I am not of Asian ethnicity, I can say that this film pleasantly surprised me. After reading some of Kevin Kwan's novel, I wondered how the film would encapsulate the dazzle and flare of its source material.
I'd like to think that this film does the book some justice. Yes, on paper it is classified as a romantic comedy, a genre often criticized for its cheesiness, predictability and unrealistic depiction of relationships, but this film is equally, if not more so, about navigating cultural differences, family expectations and standing up for oneself in the face of criticism.
In short, it's a film about important decisions to be made (i.e. "kinfolk vs. skin-folk") with a few romantic elements thrown in for good measure. There are a few key scenes not only essential for the depiction of important cultural practices, but the development of the plot as well.
And even if you're not entirely on board with the plot, the visuals steeped in nothing short of opulence will at least draw you in and keep you entertained. My hope is that prominent films like these provide the film industry a much-needed catalyst towards better representation on the silver screen - especially at a time when Hollywood is under a great deal of scrutiny to get it right.
Take notes, filmmakers.
