Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by Ricardo R — 16 Sep 2018
I felt so emotional when I watched it for the first time, not only because the film simply told an endearing story in an exceptional way, but also because I felt the representation - or lack thereof - of not just Asians but other minorities in popular culture, in film, on TV, directly impacts how these minorities are treated in life, and vice versa.
It's absolutately amazing to see many Asian faces just like mine, along with exquisite Asian cuisine, ancient Chinese architecture with a modern flair, and nuanced representations of Asian family dynamics, appear on a Hollywood movie.
Crazy Rich Asians may not be a complete representation of the Asian community, but it is a much-needed beacon of broader representation for all of us. Besides its cutural impact, the story itself is a good-natured and spectacular romantic comedy.
Come on, who doesn't swoon when Nick said "I love you" in the wedding? A bit of cutural complexity, a bit of swoon-worthy rom-com, and a whole lot of giddy, bubbly fun, Crazy Rich Asians is a dizzying delight and the enjoyable party to beat this summer.
