Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by Arturo A — 03 Sep 2018
Not to be egocentric and make this about me, but this movie taught me a lot about myself. I caught myself finding every woman in the movie extremely attractive, which in they were. And I blame that oversexualizing Asian woman in older films that I remember as a young kid.
That I knew but something I also noticed that I didn't think anything of the men in the movie. I'm a straight man, but I noticed that I kept thinking that the girls are way too hot for that guy.
I questioned my thinking, like am I racist toward Asian men? Am I thinking of them as less? Then I tried to think of good looking Asian man and all I could only think of Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, and Jet Li.
They were good-looking people, but their good looks and charm was not what they were known for and these guys in this movie were way more attractive. Then it hit me, I, in my twenty plus years of watching movies have never really been exposed to Asians in such a wide spectrum.
Maybe I haven't sought such films out, but as a frequent movie goer and movie lover in America, this is the first time I have been exposed to Asian characters not playing into a certain type of stereotype.
Amidst the movie I felt a bit enlightened by the film because not only was it a great movie with great actors and a great story. But what I got out most of the film what that I got to know more of their culture and my respect and recognition grew to the standard where it should be of all the beautiful people on the film and the people they represent.
