Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by Kathy W — 18 Aug 2018
A brilliant cast brought together to portray the rooted Asian familial piety and matriarchal dominance, especially when there is a single male child. From the opening scenes of racism, making of dumplings, tan hua viewing, to the Mah jong scene of strategy, there is a lot of depth embedded in this seemingly simply plotted rom-com.
The challenges American Chinese face when they are told they are "bananas" by their own native family, is still witnessed to this day. Even the legend Michelle Yeoh has faced this in real life.
And this movie brings to light this very real phenomenon. Love the humor in this movie, paired with Chinese pop music from the past, making this a really delightful movie!!
