Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by James D — 19 Aug 2018

Overall, a pretty good movie about adapting to other cultures. Michelle Yeoh is brilliant as the protective mother, as is Wu when she shows her vulnerability. There are dazzling montages and visual effects, whether it be the wedding scene or the reveal of the mansion grounds. The story is relatable. There is the conflict when adapting to a new culture with unknown rules, and the even more universal fear of not being enough even when at your best. Characters feel likable and real, excepting some absurdities for comedy.

Criticisms: The opening is weak. The guy is never shown as normal; we are told instead of shown (eg of his visits to the Y), a shame considering the film's propensity for beautiful visuals. Constance Wu's acting can seem a little hammy, particularly when she's delivering her longer speeches. Some of the secondary characters aren't given much meat, and are left hanging after serving some dialogue up, particularly when you would expect a secondary reaction to the main character. Honestly, it gets a little hard to tell the characters apart, particularly the catty women who don't seem to have heavily defined styles, (all Asians look alike? Even the rich ones!). The finger bowl joke is old and overused, particularly considering Rachel is supposed to be a cultured professor. Some of the comedy doesn't work, especially when the creepy brother is taking pictures of Rachel and his mom, and for some reason they laugh! The overall plot has been done before.

Best parts: Michelle Yeoh's delivery of Rachel's rejection. Not only is it unexpected, but it makes sense. I love the way they use visuals to show Rachel's internal torment and make you really relate to the character. Loved all the metaphors in the mahjong scene. The last twist was quite unpredictable, but again did not feel stilted.

Overall, the movie's enjoyable, especially for the visuals, and shared triumph you feel when Rachel conquers her obstacles.
