Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by Lisa Y — 21 Aug 2018
This is a heartwarming, lovely romantic comedy. If you're looking for a romcom with a strong female lead, this and Constance Wu is it. Personally, as an Asian American woman I have been waiting for movies like this-movies featuring a smart, strong Asian woman sans white male savior.
(And bonus, it's not a period film in ancient China with everyone doing martial arts.) Asian people with normal lives, problems, and finding love. Hollywood should never underestimate the power of giving POCs a voice and representation within the industry.
They thought Crazy Rich Asians would flop in the box office, and they thought a Pixar's Coco needed a 20-minute Frozen short to draw people in. I'm glad Hollywood was proved wrong.
