Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by Tj S — 22 Aug 2018
You would never catch me giving a rom-com 5 stars, unless it truly provided something different than the typical formula of the genre. Although this movie does have aspects that fit that mold it provided the audience with more than that.
Many would label this as a rom-com, and it is, but the themes that were explored in this film made more of an impact on me than the romance. The female empowerment that took place in this movie was impactful and inspiring and IM A MAN.
It explored in multiple character arcs and not just with our leading lady. Well done on that front. This movie also had themes of race, class and family that took someone like me out of my norm and introduced me to new culture.
From what i've mentioned above this makes this movie more than a typical rom-com. I can't end this review without mentioning Awkwafina. She was HILARIOUS!! Honestly this was one of the best in it's genre.
