Review of Crazy in Alabama (1999) by Justin K — 04 Jun 2007
Some people can't stand Melanie Griffith. Get over it and see this movie! Playing the "crazy" Aunt Lucille, she drives away from her 7 children, mother and nephews Peter Joseph and Wylie, after having poisoned her husband and cutting off his head.
Sound strange? It gets better. It is also the story of Peter Joseph (aka PeeJoe) and how he survived the racist sheriff during the social turmoil of the 1960s. I love this movie because it tells two corresponding stories about discrimination and how people overcame their troubles.
Griffith plays Aunt Lucille with the right amount of naive craziness, and Lucas Black, who was an amazing child actor, was perfect for the role of Peejoe. Meat Loaf plays the arrogant sheriff, and truly makes you despise him.
Antonio Banderas should be proud to call this his freshman film.
