Review of Crazy Heart (2009) by Bruno V — 11 Feb 2013
Unbelievably simple story telling done insanely well. The comeback of an alcoholic country song writer. That's the premise. Nothing too complex there, right? Doesn't matter. This movie was moving.
Jeff Bridges gives his best and most memorable performance since The Dude. He owns the character. He becomes Bad Blake. Maggie Gyllenhaal with her up-turned nose and fearlessness gives a great emotional performance that separates her from just being "the girlfriend.
" Now here's the real testament to Crazy Heart: the soundtrack. I'm no fan of country save for that song "Chicken Fried," but because the music is sooooooo good in the movie, it raises the rating from a three to four stars.
The best original song of the year. Had my roommate in tears long after the credits rolled. What a pussy. Still, I was enraged to learn that the soundtrack doesn't get released for another two weeks.
Even if you don't dig on the flick, you'll agree that Bridges is the tits and the soundtrack makes you rethink your bitter hatred towards those dirty redneck story songs.
