Bridges is well worth the Oscar for his very down to earth portrayal of the alcoholic has been country singer. Maggie Gyllenhaal is as good as she ever is but the surprise for me was how good Farrell was. I can't normally give a sod about most of his roles but he did catch me off guard here. Or perhaps the director did because he didn't have him coming up until I was well into the story and therefore too far gone to turn it off.

No corny happy ever after ending either..........
