Review of Crazy Heart (2009) by Geoffrey T — 11 Apr 2012
Crazy Heart is frequently compared to The Wrestler, and it's a valid comparison, but just because they are shockingly similar in structure doesn't mean they don't have their own merits. They're gone about in a different way, and they both have terrific lead performances.
There are good performances around them certainly, but Crazy Heart is Jeff Bridges's movie as much as The Wrestler was Rourke's. The most reassuring aspect of this new wave of character driven redemption films is the realistic endings.
Crazy Heart ends up being more about personal redemption for the sake of it, even if that personal redemption doesn't yield all the physical results. He doesn't really get the girl, but he gets the girls respect.
It's far more important than a redemption film made by a major studio where guy messes up, guy cleans up, guy gets girl. Life doesn't work like that; some wounds can't be healed even when everything better.
