Review of Crazy Heart (2009) by Michael L — 14 Feb 2011
It should be corny but Crazy Heart works, a country singer, lovable caricature of himself - hard drinking, hard traveling, fat, has-been love-machine. Beautifully directed, with warm attention to detail of 50 year old groupies, old fellas rendered paralyzed tight skin from the baking sun, the '78 Silverado and youngish not-so punk who recognises his pretty face carries the genius songs.
It's Bridges you watch this for, his impeccable film selection still intact making a bid for the Kris Kristoffeson mantle, fattening out like a Raging Bull DeNiro, out diving a Leaving Las Vegas Page - he's pure cinema gold.
Great cameo by Farrell, Maggie at her best since the Secretary and who wouldn't want a best mate like that. Shame about the epilogue, no need - come on America, grow up, at least once let there be no happy ending - otherwise 90%.
