Review of Crazy Eights (2006) by Jeffrey L — 25 May 2008
This movie is about a group of old friends that reunite for a childhood friend's funeral and they decide to follow his map to where they all placed a time capsule in their youth. They come across an old condemned mansion that was once used for experimenting on children in the 50's.
The mansion itself, is really creepy with some great visual shots during the movie, and the movie has some creepy atmosphere about it. Sadly, that's pretty much the only good things I can say, apart from maybe some of the performances were actually pretty good. Not all, but some.
The movie is played out to be mysterious and you're not supposed to know what's going on. However, after the opening narraration, it's plainly obvious as to what's happening, so the movie looses all of its mystery and suspense because of that. Also...nothing really happens. 95% of the movie is just the characters exploring a creepy old mansion, with the very rare occasional 'creepy' thing happening such as a door closing and locking on its own, and a metal door sliding down on its own and crushing someone. Other then those two things, nothing at all happens until toward the end and the rest of the movie is just standing around, talking. It's actually more of a drama then it is a horror movie. And to add onto that, not one single character, no matter how-well acted, is the least bit interesting. They're all boring and never get fleshed out enough to give a shit about any of them.
The movie has a creepy enough idea, but its just executed horribly.
