Review of Crazy/Beautiful (2001) by Jon W — 02 Jun 2008

Aside from one huge moment of manufactured hollywood cheese, Crazy/Beautiful is a fine film. It manages to be very romantic without being overtly sappy and moral fiber rings through every vein. It may take on the familar tone of the "star-crossed lovers" theme but it does so in a more intelligent and original manner than other films written upon the same premise.

Also, I don't know why this is but people seem to over look the spectacular performance Bruce Davison gives as the good-intentioned but misguided father. In fact, the whole beauty of this film hinges on the fact that there's not one perfect character, nor is there one entirely horrible person either.

The... humanism of it all I think is what really comes through and makes this film great.
