Review of Crazy (2000) by Sherief A — 22 Jan 2009
A Quebecois remake of The Godfather. Very stylish, imaginative and playful but still remains to be mature, engaging and touching. The characters never fail to be interesting. It began as a study of the whole family then centered on Zack's relationship with the others, his confusion with his sexuality and his alleged gift. I see Zack as someone who yearned to NOT be a special boy as everything about him made it to be one from the 1st day he was born.
Great performances from Michel Cote and Marc-Andre Grondin, they had a complex relationship in the film but anyone can always relate to it, thanks to the great writing.
Soundtrack was a key technicality in this film, it provided a great homage to the 70's and a punchline for the film through Patsy Cline's Crazy. And I understand Valle's need for this inside joke, but if it was for me, I'd rename the film just "R.Z." as the other brothers' presence was rare along the film.
