Review of Crash Pad (2017) by Anthony B — 30 Jan 2018
A laugh out loud, gasping for air riot. So many choice lines are fired off ferociously one after the next by a comedic ensemble cast that is so hilarious it hurts to even look at them on the poster. Just when you thought Carrot Top made it impossible for people to find red heads funny, up and comer Domhnall Gleeson has emerged in Hollywood as a force to be reckoned with.
Crash Pad works as well as it does because of the perfect comedic timing of those in front of and behind the camera, and while Thomas Haden Church is in top form as usual, it is Gleeson that generates majority of the movie's energy.
In the end, I was truly blown away by this one, especially since I saw the hit and miss trailer and expected a mixed bag of tricks at best. Surprisingly however, it does not feel amateurish, even though it was directed by an editor, specifically the editor of filmmaker Alexander Payne who also executive produced the film, that said, this is no Sideways, Descendants, or Nebraska.
.. and I mean that in a good way.
