Review of Crank: High Voltage (2009) by Harry W — 31 Jul 2013
Crank 2: High Voltage repeats the high octane video-game style of its predecessor featuring a cheap and simple plot combined with hectic small-scale action and a non-stop sense of energy to ensure it serves as a worthy sequel to its action-packed predecessor.
The fact that it exists after the ending to its predecessor where Chev Chelios somehow survives falling from a helicopter is stupid enough, but the fact that it turns into a story about him having to retrieve his heart after having it replaced by an artificially functioning one which he has to zap himself with electricity every hour to ensure he doesn't die is absolutely perfect. There is no way you can take a story like that seriously, but its one that's too easy to embrace. It's not as good as the story in the first Crank, but the manic energy and thoroughly cool action maintain the level of entertainment that Crank 2: High Voltage reaches for.
Crank 2: High Voltage summarises what it is in its title: A high energy sequel to a high energy action film, and even though it doesn't overshadow it's predecessor it's a grand success.
Jason Statham provides powerful charisma back to his role again and packs a mean punch as he monotonously goes through a series of one liners and bullets to carry his artificial heart to the end of the story.
There isn't much to say about Crank 2: High Voltage except that its mostly successful in living up to its predecessor, it consists of fine action and it never takes itself seriously so it's easy to watch. It's just a good piece of Jason Statham's career.
