Review of Crank (2006) by Kevin G — 30 Jun 2011
A movie like this kind of leaves me speechless. It reminds me of the same wacky and insane vibe that Paul Verhoeven's films have, but with the mentality of someone on a combination of crack-cocaine, heroin, and any number of other psychotic drugs.
Though the style clearly draws its inspiration from a broad range of sources, it is also entirely unique. In some ways it's the perfect formula for an action movie. It not only delivers ridiculous, in-your-face action, but more importantly it's completely justified by Chev Chelios' ever-growing, personal crisis.
Alongside it being an action movie, it's a truly brilliant dark comedy, transporting you right into the perspective of Chelios' drug-addled state. Jason Statham proves himself as one of, if not the, coolest pure action stars of late.
He fits the character so perfectly and really makes for an amazing action movie bad ass that you have to appreciate just for his sheer intensity. So much of this is so politically incorrect and deranged that this basically becomes a terrific modern-day exploitation film.
More importantly, it's endlessly fun and enjoyable, bearing all the guilty pleasures anyone might ask for from an over-the-top action film. Statham makes Chelios a character that you won't forget anytime soon, he is beyond cool.
