Review of Cracks (2009) by Lety C — 26 Mar 2011
Only twice in my life have I seen films that have been shot through the lens in which I see the world, and they both happen to star Eva Green. From the music to the camera angles to the dialogue - this brand of beauty completely mezmerized me.
While there's a time and a place for big stories and outlandish plots, the best films are ones that capture the reality of life's tiny moments. In this portrayal of a boarding school teacher and her students, all lines get blurred between the personal and professional, between the student and the teacher, and between the wrong, right, and inconsequential.
No matter how hard we try, there is no such thing as a purely professional relationship. Even in the coldest of hearts, there is a human element to everything we do and every life we touch. In the realm of children, especially in a place removed from the rest of the world, this is an unmistakable truth.
As I've said many times before, the greatest of films do not bear dissection of things like acting, plot, script, etc. Greatness carries you away to another place. Sometimes dark and personal, Cracks does just that.
If you see the world in a different light, you may not love this movie... but I do.
