There's a somber, savage, and shrewd Western lurking somewhere beneath the glossy surface of this watered-down sci-fi hybrid, and while it still manages to thrill with its well-choreographed fight scenes and passable plot, it falters over a handful of cornball cliches that hardly suit its hard-nosed characters.
