Review of Cowboys & Aliens (2011) by Philip R — 11 May 2013
Everybody says it's James Bond and Indiana Jones joining forces to battle Aliens in the old west. But for me, it was more like watching reincarnated versions of Steve McQueen and John Wayne joining forces to battle Aliens in the old west.
I thought this was a very entertaining movie. Both Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford were terriffic as Jake Lonergan and Woodrow Dolarhyde. Also, Olivia Wilde was good. This movie feauters a lot of familar faces: Sam Rockwell (The Green Mile) as Doc, Keith Carradine (Southern Comfort) and Noah Ringer (The Last Airbender) as John and Emmett Taggart, Adam Beach (Flags of Our Fathers) as Nat Colorado, Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) as Dolarhyde's son Percy, Clancy Brown (Mr.
Krabs from Nickelodeon's Spongebob Squarepants) as Meacham, Walton Goggins (TV's The Sheild) as Hunt, and David O'Hara (Braveheart) as Pat Dolan. I love the score that composer Harry Gregson-Williams did at the beginning of the film.
It sounded so good. The combining forces of Jon Favreau, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Steven Spielberg make Cowboys & Aliens a hell of a great western. Or should I say: A hell of a great Sci-Fi Western.
