Review of Couples Retreat (2009) by Stephen B — 20 Apr 2011
Couples Retreat is an ensemble comedy centered around four couples who go to a tropical-island resort to work on their marriages. It has its moments where it forces you to stop and chuckle, but there are no moments that make you really laugh like films such as The Hangover do.
The characters were also a little jumbled up because there were so many protagonists. Having more than one protagonist is risky and whilst it worked in great films like Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs (both by Quentin Tarantino), this film fails on the most part at achieving the same victory.
To be quite honest, the only couple I truly found humorous was the one portrayed by Kristen Davis and Jon Favreau. This is because they argued. In films about recovering marriages, it's arguments that make me laugh and they were the only ones doing this.
Overall, a film with bright moments but mostly a bit of a letdown.
