Review of Country Strong (2010) by Hossman C — 13 Apr 2011
*** (out of four).
I'm not much of a fan of country music, so I'm glad that this drama has braoder appeal for me. It is melodramatic and certainly not a perfect look at the world of country music, but decent performances and a good heart save the film and made it worthwhile for me.
Gwyneth Paltrow is a troubled country music superstar who has been spending time in rehab. Her husband (Tim McGraw) is worried about her and her career, while a would-be country singer (Garret Hedlund) who works at the rehab is growing closer to her.
It's interesting that Tim McGraw is the only actual country singer in the cast and yet he is the only one who doesn't sing at all. Gwyneth does one of her best performances and Garrett Hedlund is almost too convincing as a hippy-country singer/songwriter.
Not a homerun. It does play on the emotions a bit too much, but overall it is solid.
