Review of Country Strong (2010) by Elisabeth B — 31 May 2011
I love Gwynyth Paltrow's voice but to sit through this movie to hear it, was just not worth it. The film didn't really know what it wanted to be about. Boozing country star making a comeback? Repairing relationships? Not quite. Even an ultra devoted husband and AA sponsor couldn't save this egocentric mess of a singer whose poor-me behavior culminates in one final selfish act. The real story here was of Beau and Chiles and her character arc throughout the film. The only moment I felt anything was when they sang Give In To Me on stage. That was a really pretty scene.
I also didn't buy Paltrow's skinny frame for a boozer, maybe a heroin addict, but definitely not a drunk's body. I wish she would have picked a diff script to showcase her acting and singing talent.
